MOGs N3RDCast, 09 March, 2007: Update On Vanguard, Pirates of the Burning Sea, And Hogging Warhammer!

Woody, Dr. Sexy and I finally get back to doing what we do best: avoiding talking about MOGs at all cost! Well, we SORT OF talk about MOGs. Woody gives us an update on his progress in Vanguard, I talk about the great deal of time I spent scaring away children so I could hog all the time at the Warhammer Online demo booth at the NYC Comic Con (yaay for being a bigger, scarier nerd!). Dr. Sexy and I talk about trying desperately to get to play some Pirates of the Burning Sea (which looked DAMN fine), but we were chased away by very… large… boned… creatures… Oh, and Dr. Sexy got excited about a Wacom tablet. Or something. I don’t know, that guy gets excited by light fixtures, there’s no keeping up with him.

  1. Of all the upcoming games coming out / are out, Warhammer intrigues me the most. I REALLY dig the idea of being able to play monsters for your pvp fix. I like regular pvp well enough, but that just sounds cool as hell.

Of course, it also sounds like something that powergamers will exploit, if the player controlled monsters are supposed to be preventing the other players from getting a special quest item or chance at an uber random drop item.

And yay for the return of the old theme song! Or is it just that this theme song is the MOGcast theme song, and that other horrible one is the COMICcast theme song?

Cause if that’s the case, I’m glad the comic versions are too big for me to DL anymore! :D

  2. I think you’ve got Warhammer & LotRO mixed up. LotRO’s the one w/ the monster playing. Unless you mean orcs, in which case that is Warhammer…

And no, this theme song’s just for the MOGCasts, the new one is for the comics. SUCK IT! =P

  3. Aww crap. Hearing the old song made me smile.
Nice show, but a little bit on the short side.

  4. I’ll throw in my 1 cent here (not sure if it’s worth the whole 2, so you get a discount)

    1. Vanguard – It’s the real EQ 2. It’s actually a pretty fun game, but it does require a pretty substantial game system to play comfortably. It’s also still very buggy (heard it referred to as Bugguard). It definitely has a distinct feel to it and will remind a lot of folks of EQ if they ever played it.

    2. Lord of the Rings: I probably didn’t get far enough in the beta to really experience the coolness (like the monster play, which sounds like a blast). It really felt very WoWish to me, though a bit more story driven. Starting to game off in an instance to kick off the story was a pretty nice touch. Once you get out of those instances, it has a very typical modern MOG feel to it. Not bad, and definitely runs smoother than Vanguard.

Another game you guys need to look at is Age of Conan. I’ve only read a bit about it, but it sounds interesting. Especially the fact that the 1st 20 levels are single player, not online (assuming that hasn’t changed since the last time I looked). It should also be a pretty decent looking game since it will be DX10. Granted, that means I’ll need to buy a new video card, since mine isn’t DX10 capable.

  5. Actually, looks like I’m sort of wrong about Conan. The first 20 levels or so are online, but they’re mostly instanced. So, it’s basically an online single player. Some of the earely stuff about the game made it sound like it was going to be offline.

Haha, Kaigon is a noob! :O

  7. Kwip,

You wondered about how Vanguard would play on a lower end system. I just ran in on my laptop, at the highest performance settings but with max resolution for my laptop (1440 x 900), and it ran pretty smoothly. My laptop is
P4M 1.6 ghz (not a dual core or anything like that)
    1 GB RAM
Mobility Radeon 9700 (128 mb of RAM)
60 GB 7200 RPM hard drive
    On board sound (nothing special)
    Win XP SP 2

Haven’t really tried playing @ higher graphics settings. The game defaults to “Balanced”, which was a bit choppy but not terrible. Hope this helps.
