MOGs N3RDCast, 29 November 2006: Permadeath! Gasp!

Sure, it sounds good on paper – your players doing stupid, risky stuff in a dangerous area? Kill ‘em! Kill ‘em FOREVER! But would anyone actually play a game that did something like that? Let alone pay you hard-earned money for the chance to lose everything?
Well, I certainly think so. We discuss this (and somehow many other topics, despite our best efforts to stay on track), and give our oh-so-expert opinions on whether or not it would work. Of course I’m right, but this is one subject that’s pretty dear to my heart, so I’d love for you to give it a listen and let us know what you think!

Nice cast guys. What about using a system like Guild Wars? You can create an “RPG” character, who you can work up and maybe eventually do a permadeath thing. Or you can create a “PVP” character, who is immediately in the permadeath area but you start at a high (or even max) level, but don’t necessarily have the best gear or skills?
As to your mention of Meridian 59 type thing, how about if you become a criminal you are always flagged for permadeath until you lose your criminal mark, which should be a difficult quest or series of quests? That way, you have to work to escape that setting, instead of just jumping into a non-permadeath area. And perhaps, put a level range on permadeath type situations, where the uber level 100 guy can gank the level 1 newb who just joined to try the game.
Just my 2 cents.
