MOGs N3RDCast, 08 November 2006: Merchandising Your MOG
Posted by Kwip on November 8th, 2006 8 Comments
Woody, Dr Sexy and I sit down to share our brilliance on the concept of merchandise for MOGs. Inspired by WoW’s CCG, we consider the repercussions of putting your brand on something other than your game.
That, and we reminisce about some rather ridiculous stories involving our own terrible MOG addictions. Or at least Woody’s. It’s funny to laugh at other’s frustrations!
It’s been an awfully long time since we graced you with our wisdom. If you’ve missed us, the feeling’s mutual, believe you me! But you can get your fix of us right here!
The Serenity Online write-up I mention is here, in case you were looking.
Oh, and the Ryzom trial is here.

That link ain’t working.
Whaaaat? That’s crazy talk, there. That link’s never worked better.
I guess I can take comfort in the fact that it still was getting downloaded, so some people are actually crazy enough to be subscribing to the MOG-casts still (I managed to get the enclosure tag correct, despite screwing it up on the page). Wacky.

Its working fine now. I’m guessing the computers at my work don’t appreciate the nerdcast as much as I do.
Keep up the good work, even we dutch folk are enjoying it.
Well, no, it WAS broke. Stupid fat fingers!
Glad you enjoyed it!

You should give Neverwinter Nights 2 a try Kwip. I wasn’t a huge fan of the 1st one, but the 2nd one is A LOT more fun (to me obviously). It feels more like Knights of the Old Republic more than Neverwinter.
And if you guys play DDO sometime, let me know. I enjoyed.it when I goofed around with the trial, but DDO is so definitely a group game.

Took me forever to download this on dial-up, but I was definately happy to see another MOG version.
If I still had the disposable income of my youth, I’d be all over the WoW card trading game. I don’t have anyone to PLAY it with, really, around here (save my wife… and Crusher, I guess), but I’d still buy them. I really dig the artwork on those cards, and hey… it’s Warcraft stuff. =P
Speaking of MtG, did any of you ever check out MtG: Online? Woody was commenting that he was frustrated that he couldn’t use his old cards in tournaments, and Dr Sexy was saying he enjoyed playing on an even playing field with other players (which is why he liked the booster pack tournaments). Magic has options for BOTH those (sort of). I’m pretty sure you still can’t play with older cards in tournaments, but you can play regular matches using them. And they have the booster pack tournaments, as WELL as the ability to choose difficulty setting (so if you don’t feel like buying millions of cards and spending hours assembling a deck, choose the noobie game to play with other people not quite sure what they’re doing). Of course, you’d have to buy all your cards all over again, and the decks online only go back so far, but if you were ever jonesing to get back into MtG, that’d be a great place to go (in my opinion). Think they still offer a free trial too.
For the other mechandize, I like Blizzard’s approach. I’d much rather own a book, or poster, or board/card game featuring WoW stuff, as opposed to a mousepad or coffee mug or the other traditional stuff. Heck, Blizzard even has action figures for it’s games. Not sure how well ANY of those are doing for them, but it’s a very cool option to offer your fans.
