MOGs N3RDCast, 07 August 2006:Player-Made Content

Woody, Dr. Sexy and Kwip (briefly!) tackle the subject of player-made content and whether it belongs in a MOG or is better left to games like NWN.
After a long break, we come back with a short N3RDCast. Aren’t we ungrateful? You should be happy – to get just this much, I had to keep bugging them. Calling them, and calling, and calling…
It’s our smallest file yet, but Kaigon still won’t be able to download it. Sigh. We gotta get that guy broadband access somehow.
Give it a listen here.

Wow. How about those sirens in the background? I should’ve mentioned we recorded this in the midst of a 5-alarm fire.

You guys talked a lot about the content and end-game problem. Personally, I think a lot of that is perspective. Woody kind of ragged on WoW a bit, for me it’s been one of the most fun MMO’s out there. Not necessarily because it’s simpler, though that does help, but because there really is a good bit of non-end game content that you can enjoy if you take the time. In the early game (1-20), which is all I can really talk about, doing quests is a blast. But that’s just me, I’d SO much rather quest and get into a story and see things, especially with a good ground. It does become a grind if you create a bunch of alts and go through it all again. But many games DO really have the content, but you have to get the right group (or a solo friendly game) that does exist if you look for it.
Player made content has some potential if it can be controlled and quality assured correctly before it goes live. There will be a vast majority of people who will skip it because you can’t power level with it, but there are plent of us who’d love to give it a try if it’s actually fun and interesting.
Just my 2 cents.
