MOGs N3RDCast, 31 May 2006: On Role-Playing

Woody, Dr. Sexy and I tackle the ever-so-amusing subject of Role-Playing in Role-Playing games. I’d give a longer explanation, but that’s pretty much it. Oh – there is some Gord-awful background noise, so, you know, this one sucks as much as the rest of them. Only it’s not because of our discussion – which is QUITE brilliant – but instead because of annoying sounds. Other than my laugh, I mean.

  1. Really cool cast guys. I really enjoyed listing to it.

I never was much of a roleplayer myself online, though I always enjoyed it when I played PnP. You’re right that there really is such a negative reaction to it, even on a roleplaying server. I’m not sure how much of a place it has in the powergaming/grinding attitude that seems to be the common environment of MOG’s nowadays.

The solo vs. grouping conversation was really interesting to me too. I usually end up soloing a lot in MOG’s because I don’t know a lot of people who play them, so that’s usually important to me. But, to be honest, the most fun i’ve had in an MOG has been our sessions over the last few weeks. It’s just been a lot of fun to be in a group of people who just want to have fun. And keeping Kwip alive keeps me busy *grin* But honestly, after a while soloing can get a little old, even in a well designed game like WoW. I get to the point where I switch to single-player RPG’s like Oblivion because then I don’t have to worry about idiots kill stealing or watiing in line to kill my 20 rotten bob zombies to get their teeth or something. I’d actually like to try DDO with a consistent group because I enjoyed it in beta, but it’s so not a solo friendly game.

Okay when the fuck is this Pirate Ninja River Fight thing going down. I need an excuse to visit.

  3. You know, Blizzard is doing a new event soon. Scourge invasion. I’m unsure of the details of HOW exactly it’ll go down, but essentially, the Scourge (evil Undead race) is going to start striking against the different races of WoW. Sounds like it has the potential to be really cool. Not sure if it’s a high level only thing or what though.

Thought you all might be interested, given the ‘event’ stuff you guys talked about towards the end.

Btw Kwip, I’m gonna have to bail on tomorrow night. Cassie’s pretty much threatened to hate me for life if I log into WoW again before I manage to find a job. =P

  4. Jobs, bah! Jobs are overrated. I mean, what good are they, except to pay bills and things like that? *grin*

  5. You guys mentioned Neverwinter Nights a number of times during the cast. You should check this out if you haven’t seen it already:

Just looks kind of cool to me.

    BTW, we still playing tonight?

  6. I’m not sure. I want to, but I know Kaigon’s not gonna make it, and I’ve got a bunch of shit to do to get ready for our trip tomorrow. Soooo….maybe?

  7. If you can’t, no big deal. Hey, do you guys play DDO on some time kind of routine schedule? I’d really like to try that one, but I don’t want to do it without a group.

  8. Yeah, I think one way a new game not made by a multi-million/billion dollar company can break into the market is by have lots of good server events. one problem with these Not mentioned in your podcast is, when an event happens, if its announced ahead of time, so many players show up in the same area, that the game server crashes…..anyway, supposedly Eve Online has regular events, but damn if I ever run into them, because its such a big world and they usually don’t say where the events will occur. Events are an extra cost companies say. Well have some sort of volunteer program of subscribed players maybe hold the events and give them some general guidelines….if they do a good job, let them do it again. If they do something messed-up, don’t let them do it again…….you know—just general ideas here. I’ve heard many players say they’d do that stuff for games for no charge. sure, exploits/favoratism and whatnot—well there are ways to prevent those. I mean, game devs should be creative enough to figure out how not to have those things happen.
