Comics N3RDCast 02/16/09: A Taxing Time

I never watched Psych prior to last week, but I think this is a show I’m either going to start watching, or – preferably – pick up the DVDs. It’s very funny and clever (at least one episode is!), and makes fun of gullible people.
HappyJack’s equally as impressed with United States of Tara, and while I like the premise, there’s just no way I’m upping my cable subscription to catch one show.
Dollhouse premiered to a lot of mixed reviews – most of them negative from what I’ve heard. HappyJack wasn’t overly impressed with it, but he is going to keep watching it, so we’ll see what he thinks.
If you’re in the area, make sure you join us at the Lehigh Valley Comic Con. It’s a TINY con, but a very cool one – great deals to be had, a lot of good folks AND HOT DOGS! But if you don’t make it to that, you have GOT to come down for the CGS’ Super Show, which is now pushed back to March of 2010.
I won Jon’s bum from The Hat Decides, but being that we are generous souls and want to spread the love around, we’re giving ownership of Jon’s bum to The Comic Book Queers! They would certainly treat it much better than us, so Jon should be deeply relieved.
Eli is getting married soon, but I refuse to believe it. He’s one of the last bachelors, and he had much better prospects than most of us combined. I REFUSE to believe he’s going to leave all that opportunity behind to tie himself down to ONE vagina FOREVER!
Or a couple years, something like that…

We all read webcomics, but finding the gems in the trash is sometimes a real challenge. Joe Loves Crappy Movies did a very good one for Taken. Any time you get to call kids “dicks” is ok in my book!

What do you find tedious about coloring in Photoshop vs Illustrator? That part of the conversation (funnily enough having nothing to do with the main focus of this podcast) caught my attention, and it’s bugging me that I don’t know what you were referring to.
I demand elaboration!
Coloring in Illustrator traps pretty wel (which is why you have to flat in PS). And in Illustrator CS there is the LivePaint feature.

I’ve just finished the second hardcover collection of Brand New Day and have to really disagree with Happy Jack about the reveal of Menace. Knowing that Harry’s girlfriend is Menace makes a lot of sense based on these first two Menace appearances. Green Goblin was introduced long before Norman or Harry Osborn so while Green Goblin’s secret identity certainly wasn’t know from the start it is pretty clear that the creative team on Amazing knew who Menace was all along… and the mystery of Menace was drawn out for over a year before the reveal… considering Amazing comes out three times a month that’s actually three years worth of books if you really think about it.
I really enjoyed the first two hardcovers of Brand New Day… even the Bob Gale Freak storyline was fun for me. I mean how can you not get behind a super villain who is essentially Abortion Man. The goofy dialogue is very much in keeping with Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s original run (I’m also rereading my Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus so that stuff is fresh in my mind)… I was really down on Brand New Day at first but picking it up in trade form I really dig it and it is one of the best all ages superhero books coming out right now. The stories really capture the light and fun quality that Spider-Man should have… at least in the first twelve issues worth of stories.
I’ve already ordered Brand New Day Vol. 3, Kraven’s First Hunt and New Ways To Die and I’m really anxious to get them. I’ve pre-ordered the two hard covers after that.
I just hope that now that I’m finally on board with Spider-Man’s new format they don’t undo Mephisto’s deal and go back to pre-One More Day status. It took me an entire year to sort of distance Brand New Day from One More Day so that I could look at it with fresh eyes and appreciate it as a new iteration of Spider-Man the same way I do with Ultimate Spider-Man, the movie version and the cartoon versions.
I fully expect Marvel to fuck me over though… I mean they still have that Jeph Loeb, J. Scott Campbell shit on the back burner and they knew to start this Dark Reign shit as soon as I had read the first hardcover of Matt Fraction’s Iron Man so I wouldn’t be able to pick up anymore of that.
I look forward to the economic collapse really hate fucking Marvel and DC to death in the near future with their four dollar books and all this event on top of event bullshit. A lot of the layoffs are Nerd jobs so I hope the big two are prepared to suck the dick of failure. I have a feeling Diamond’s recent movies to ensure we can only get Top 300 books in comic books stores aren’t going to save them and the direct market will fall in the face of these troubling economic times.
In the end, what the real Jason E Becker is saying is that I was right, and Amazing Spider-Man is a great comic after OMD. Thank you sir for concurring my geniusity.

Ah. I learned about trapping in school, but didn’t honestly fully understand it (as we never had to actually practice using it… we learned the theory of it, which I kind of understood. but then promptly forgot all about).
I assume the Live Paint duplicates the photoshop paint brush? If so, I might want to start working more in Illustrator. I like it’s text and vector control (for word balloons), but always have to switch back to PS for my coloring / artwork retouches.

Happy Jack has never once said that Amazing Spider-Man is great. It has been nothing but faint praise, back-handed compliments and outright bitching every week for over a year.
